Of Palestinian origin, Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan was born and raised in Kuwait, and then graduated with a degree in Business Administration from the American University in Cairo and has a honorary Master’s degree in International Cooperation and Development from the University of Rome La Sapienza. She wed King Abdullah II on June 10, 1993. The couple has four children – Crown Prince Hussein, Princesses Iman and Salma, and Prince Hashem.
Sheikh Moza bint Nasser Al Missned was born in Al Khor Qatar, and married the heir apparent Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in 1977. From 1995 to 2013, she was the consort to the erstwhile Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad, who stepped down for his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Sheikha holds a degree in Sociology from Qatar University and an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has five sons and two daughters.
Both women have used their privileged positions to further causes close to their hearts. Her Majesty Queen Rania has initiated many programs related to education, community empowerment, youth, and cross-cultural dialog. She was declared UNICEF’s first Eminent Advocate for Children, and is the co-founder and global chair of 1GOAL. She joined the United Nations Foundation Board of Directors in 2006, and is a member of the World Economic Forum Foundation Board. She has received several honors and awards from many countries and institutions from around the world for her achievements. Queen Rania is very active on social media channels like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter – with more than four million followers on the latter.
Her Highness Sheikha Moza has also been actively involved in politics and society. She was a driving force behind the Education City and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel projects. She is the chairperson of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, chairperson of the Arab Democracy Foundation, and president of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. In 2003, she was UNESCO‘s Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education. She was declared Honorary Dame Commander Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2010, and has received many other international accolades as well. Sheikha Moza’s office runs her popular Instagram account, and she also has her own website.
Queen Rania has long been admired for her refined taste and interest in fashion. She is always dressed impeccably, and shows a preference for neutral colors. She has been spotted in brands like Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, sporting modern silhouettes. Recently, she attended the MET Gala in New York with her son. Sheikha Moza is known for her love of couture, and has topped many best-dressed lists. She has a definite knack for taking the most westernized outfits and customizing them to suit her modest sensibilities. Her signature turban and sunglasses have made her a modern Arab style icon.
