This Valentine’s Day, try an icy adventure with your beloved!
Every year in winter, when the Torne River near the small village of Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden freezes, a new ICEHOTEL is created. The luxurious hotel is an art project, and is the world’s first and largest hotel built entirely out of snow and ice. By spring, the hotel melts as nature intended, and the hotel switches to cabins and rooms for the rest of the year.
Located 200km north of the Arctic Circle, Jukkasjärvi is where once can experience untouched nature and the splendor of a true winter. Every year, a creative team comes together to make the ICEHOTEL. A team of light designers works to ensure that the lighting enhances these creations in the best way possible. There’s no better place to get away from the whole world than at ICEHOTEL.
Guests have a choice of staying in the cold ice rooms or in the warm cabins. The temperature in the ice rooms never falls below -5°C and is definitely an experience of a lifetime. There is a sauna and a relaxation area with a roaring fire and hot lingonberry juice on tap. Guests are provided warm clothing and a “survival guide” for a stay in the ice rooms. Specially made Arctic sleeping bags keep guests cozy through the night. Apart from standard rooms, the hotel features individually designed and themed suites. Choose from 16 Art Suites, which feature a 3D installation of original art, all beautifully carved by hand. It also includes a private changing booth. The most lavish accommodation is the deluxe suite, which features separate lounge and sleeping areas and a frosted glass door. An intricately detailed 3D installation awaits guests in the deluxe suite. The package includes a heated ensuite bathroom and sauna, thick mattress, and private changing room.
The warm areas feature a choice of chalets and rooms. The chalets include two bedrooms, kitchenette, living room and bathroom, with modern facilities like WiFi. Another option is wilderness camping, which includes an overnight tour on dogsleds or snowmobiles.
When it comes to dining, guests can choose from a rustic and traditional meal at the Homestead, located on the banks of the river Torne; or a gourmet meal at the ICEHOTEL restaurant, which features gourmet offerings served on plates of crystal clear ice. The ICEBAR is also a great place to hang out and enjoy a drink. Of course, the glasses are made of ice!
Activities include guided tours, skiing and snowmobile tours, ice sculpting, dog sledding, photography courses, and traditional sauna rituals. The location is also perfect to view the famed northern lights, and the hotel offers a wilderness dinner which includes the viewing.
Huddle under the panoramic view of the starry skies, with a warm fire roaring and only each other for company. A Valentine’s break at the ICEHOTEL is surely one to cherish for years to come.
