Nasser Alghanim: Capturing the Moment!

Who is Nasser Alghanim?

I think this question should be directed to the people who know me closely! I find it difficult to answer myself. But I wish the answer would be that Nasser Alghanim is a good and respected man, who is always there when you need him.

What makes you different from the rest?

I believe that we are all different in our own way. I think I’m frank and very straight forward. Maybe this makes me distinctive from the rest.

Name three things you are passionate about in life.

My son Khalifa takes first place; then comes photography. I have been obsessed with it since the first time I held a camera four years ago. The last one would be football, especially the Liverpool team.

What is creativity according to you?

Creativity is creating something different and distinctive from what’s been seen before! Photography, for example, has the ability to seize the moment and to tell a story and this is not easy; especially as we see hundreds of photos daily. Maybe that’s why I chose street photography, because this way I can capture that magic moment when everything is in just the right place without any arrangement.

How did you start your journey with photography?

It began accidentally, when I found the Flickr account of my relative Faisal Al Besher, who is a professional photographer. I was amazed by his work and felt like I needed to learn about photography. I began to teach myself through books, the Internet, YouTube – and then I undertook a number of professional courses.

What inspires you?

In the beginning I photographed everything I laid eyes on. Then I discovered a love for portraits. Now my photography focus on trips has enabled me to visit many places that I would have never considered if not for my passion.

Who is an elegant man in your view?

Steve McQueen.

Who is your idol in life?

My mother, because she always bears me! In photography, it would be Henri Cartier-Bresson. I’ve seen his pictures hundreds of times and each time I am surprised by the beauty of his pictures. I also respect photojournalists and war photographers who put themselves in terrifying and harsh conditions to take pictures that shake the world. James Nachtwey is one of them; his work is amazing.

What does beauty mean to you?

Anything that makes me pause and admire it.

Is photography limited to beauty or does it reflect the truth?

The story or the message carried by the image sometimes is more important than the scenery or the image composition. And sometimes the image is very beautiful, but it reflects an ugly reality.

What has being behind the camera taught you?

It taught me many things – most importantly how to see.

Who is your favorite designer?

Three basic pieces every man must have in his closet:

T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and clean socks.

How do you see fashion?
