Meet one of the most successful fashion photographers in the world.
American photographer Steven Klein was born on April 30, 1965. He studied painting at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. His photography career started three decades ago with a Christian Dior campaign in 1985. Since then, he has shot ad campaigns for brands like Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Balenciaga and many more.
His shots have a signature feel to them, meticulous and sharply crafted. Klein has a penchant for the obscure, and likes to present a sort of hyper reality, to demonstrate how ideas and objects aren’t always what they seem. His editorial work has been published in illustrious magazines like Vogue, W magazine, GQ, and L’Officiel. His shoots are known for making strong visual statements, highlighting the subject of his shot very well. He has also captured unseen sides of celebrities and actors through his portraits.
Apart from photography, Klein has dabbled in multimedia by making music videos for Madonna and Lady Gaga. In 2003, he collaborated with Madonna to create an installation exhibit named X-STaTIC PRO=CeSS. This year, he collaborated with cosmetic company NARS to create a limited edition holiday collection of cosmetics.
Klein admits that he was not very interested in academics as a child, and turned to visual art. He tried glass blowing, sculpture, and painting before moving on to photography. He even sourced his own clay to make pottery. Hardworking and determined, he pursued his photography passion by taking pictures even at six in the morning. His evolution behind the scenes is evident when he explains his comfort level at creating moving images, rather than a still picture.
Steven Klein’s phenomenal success in the industry is proof that sincerity, dedication, and hard work are just as necessary as talent.
